High Anti-Corruption Court to Announce Decision on Potential Suspension of Chernihov Tomorrow, July 2nd

Although the High Anti-Corruption Court (VAKS) has not officially suspended Oleksii Chernihov from his position as Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, he has decided to take a temporary leave from his duties. Moreover, a hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, July 2nd, at midday, where the court will announce its decision regarding the possible suspension of Chernihov from his official responsibilities. Today, the court heard the arguments of the prosecution, defense, and the suspect himself, leading to a brief recess as a final ruling is awaited. The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) demanded Chernihov’s suspension during the pre-trial decision, citing risks such as influence over witnesses and the potential destruction or tampering of evidence. A bail of 120 million hryvnias was set and paid on June 27th. Prosecutors argue that the high-ranking official might use his influence and personal connections to pressure ministry staff and others to distort or destroy evidence or interfere with the investigation. Chernihov's lawyers dismissed these concerns as unfounded, and the suspect himself denied any intentions of obstructing the investigation. He emphasized that he does not have the authority to replace Minister Kuleba and is committed to fulfilling all court obligations, expressing his readiness to obey the court’s decisions. On June 23rd, NABU (National Anti-Corruption Bureau) formally notified Chernihov of suspicion of abuse of power and illicit enrichment in significant amounts, with the investigation revealing a broader corruption scheme involving top officials in the construction sector. The scheme was exposed by anti-corruption authorities on June 13th, involving alleged misappropriation in the Ministry of Regional Development. The accused include former and current officials, such as an ex-advisor to the minister, a director of a state enterprise, representatives of construction companies, and officials from Naftogaz Ukraine. Reports indicate that searches related to this case were conducted about a month ago, and all suspects are part of Chernihov's close circle of associates.
