Denmark assumes presidency of the EU Council: key priorities and strategic directions for 2024

On July 1, 2024, Denmark officially took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. This marks a significant milestone for the nation, which aims to contribute meaningfully to shaping European policies and strengthening collective security amid geopolitical challenges. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted during the opening ceremony that the main priority will be enhancing Europe's defense capabilities in light of Russia’s war against Ukraine and increasing threats from the United States, particularly concerning Greenland – Denmark’s autonomous territory. Under the motto "A Strong Europe in a Changing World," Denmark plans to focus on creating a safer, more competitive, and 'green' society. The government’s program emphasizes that the global situation has become increasingly unpredictable due to political upheavals, economic competition, and rising conflicts. Therefore, NATO and the EU need to intensify efforts to bolster defense and strengthen their institutions. Denmark advocates for the EU’s enlargement, viewing it as essential for ensuring stability and countering external threats. The country plans to promote candidate accession talks with Ukraine, Moldova, and Western Balkan countries, considering this a strategic step toward regional stability. Additionally, there is a significant focus on preparing for the post-2027 policies, modernizing EU cohesion policies, and ensuring they are effective in responding to contemporary challenges, including the impacts of the Ukraine conflict. "We aim to create a Europe capable of independently confronting new challenges while maintaining unity in difficult circumstances," Frederiksen emphasized. Moreover, Denmark is committed to supporting Ukraine in strengthening its security across political, military, and civil spheres. The official program reiterates that aid to Ukraine remains a priority, and sanctions against Russia should be maintained to sustain pressure on the aggressor. The country also advocates for expanding the EU’s global influence through reinforced trade agreements, economic cooperation, and targeted financial mobilization. Protecting economic interests and mitigating external economic threats through protective trade mechanisms are also among the key objectives. Overall, Denmark desires to contribute to building a stronger, more resilient, and responsible European Union capable of acting independently and effectively addressing today’s global challenges.
