Budanov warns: neglecting Ukraine’s defense will lead to Russian military takeover

Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, issued a stark warning to both the Ukrainian public and military personnel about the vital importance of actively defending the country. He emphasized that ignoring military service obligations and delaying mobilization not only weaken Ukraine’s defensive capacity but also risk territorial integrity, as failure to act could allow Russian military formations to appear on Ukrainian land. During an interview on “Hromadske Radio,” Budanov highlighted that President Putin’s statement that “Russian land will be where a Russian soldier steps” should serve as a warning for all Ukrainians. He called on citizens to remain vigilant and proactive, stressing that already occupied regions are still under enemy control and the situation continues to evolve. The intelligence official confirmed that fighting remains intense, and significant improvements on the front are unlikely in the immediate future. He added that the prolongation of conflict depends on negotiations for peace. The chief urged Ukrainians not to hide from service or evade duty, as otherwise Russia will increase its presence through additional forces—something already observed on occupied territories. In conclusion, Budanov pointed out that the front line will remain tense for a long time, with no quick resolution expected. Ultimately, the future of Ukraine hinges on the outcomes of peace negotiations, which will determine whether stability and security are restored.
