Poland Dramatically Ramps Up Artillery Shell Production to Counter Russian Threat
In response to the escalating military threat posed by Russia, Poland is undertaking significant strategic measures to bolster its defense capabilities. Reports indicate that the country plans to increase its artillery shell production fivefold. In the coming days, the state defense group PGZ will receive an additional $663 million to realize this ambitious initiative. The main goal is to significantly raise domestic manufacturing of 155mm and 120mm tank shells, aiming to reduce dependency on imports and prepare for potential conflicts. According to the Minister of State Assets, Jakub Javorowski, the war in Ukraine has highlighted the importance of modern artillery munitions. He emphasized that 155mm shells are crucial in contemporary combat scenarios and must be produced in large quantities. Currently, PGZ manufactures approximately 30,000 shells annually, but with increased funding, this figure is expected to reach between 150,000 and 180,000 within three years. The production is maintained within Poland to avoid reliance on imported components and to minimize delays. Moreover, the government is channeling resources into producing necessary materials such as missile fuel and nitrocellulose to ensure full industry autonomy. Despite these efforts, Poland still faces challenges stemming from shortages of shells, raising concerns among military and political circles. Additionally, the Polish government is negotiating with Grupa Azoty—the country's largest chemical producer—to support the supply of materials used in creating explosive substances. The financial assistance is needed for the manufacture of missile propellants and nitrocellulose, essential components of ammunition. Jakub Javorowski noted that Azoty currently struggles with financial difficulties due to mismanagement and corruption schemes introduced during the ruling Law and Justice party's tenure in 2023. Several criminal cases have been initiated, with nearly 100 reports filed with prosecutors. Meanwhile, European military and political leaders increasingly stress the need to boost artillery ammunition supplies for Ukraine. It is reported that in 2023, the European Union plans to double its deliveries of large-caliber shells, totaling around two million units of various types, to support Ukraine’s defense amid ongoing conflict.
