Massive Missile Attack on Drohobych: Consequences and City’s Response
On the night of June 29, the city of Drohobych in the Lviv region of Ukraine was subjected to a large-scale missile strike that left destruction and injuries behind. According to official municipal sources, Russian troops launched a relentless assault, firing a total of 21 enemy targets at the city, including missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. This attack marked the most extensive since the beginning of full-scale hostilities, recorded by local authorities. Igor Yuzviyak, head of the emergency and civil protection department, stated that adverse weather conditions — dense clouds and poor visibility — hampered efforts to intercept and neutralize incoming threats. The attack resulted in six fire outbreaks, one of which was a fuel tank with a volume of 1,000 liters, igniting a fire. Over 250 rescue workers from the State Emergency Service, along with 47 specialized units of machinery and 150 law enforcement officers, worked tirelessly to contain the aftermath. Russian shelling damaged residential housing — shattering 50 windows across six apartment buildings — caused partial power outages in sections of the city, and temporarily paralyzed the operation of pumping stations. Ukrainian air defenses successfully shot down 475 of 477 enemy air targets during the night, demonstrating their high combat readiness amid ongoing hostilities. Unfortunately, during this air raid, Ukrainian pilot Colonel Maksym Ustymenko lost his life, illustrating the sacrifices made in defending the country. Meanwhile, Russia launched over 60 missiles and 477 drones across Ukraine, most of which were destroyed by Ukrainian forces, highlighting the resilience and operational capacity of Ukraine’s defenses.
