Delay in Murder Case on Funicular: Mother of Victim Maxim Calls for Justice
In Kyiv, a heartbreaking and intense story continues to unfold, stirring public concern — the case involving the death of 16-year-old Maxim Materukhin, which occurred in April 2024 on one of the city's oldest funiculars. Despite several months passing, the investigation and court proceedings have stalled due to the inaction of the defense attorneys representing the suspect — Artyom Kosov, an employee of the State Guard Service. Maxim’s mother, Irina, openly states that her son was broken not only by the tragedy itself but also by an unjust and prolonged legal process, which she believes is intentionally delayed by the suspect’s lawyers to avoid accountability. "Instead of actively defending their client and aiding in a swift resolution, lawyers Dmytro Zemnitsky and Bogdan Kushnir regularly sabotage the proceedings by simply not showing up without any valid reason — this has happened multiple times," Irina laments. "Our family feels that justice is being deliberately delayed, possibly to give the suspect a chance to remain free or receive a minimal sentence. We only want justice for our son." She emphasizes that the accused, Artyom Kosov, faces charges that could lead to 10 to 15 years behind bars or even life imprisonment. The family’s sole desire is to see a fair punishment for the perpetrator, emphasizing that Maxim’s death is a tragic betrayal of life that must not go unpunished. Irina also urges society and authorities to pay attention to the case, considering its importance and societal implications. She calls on Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, to help disseminate information to raise awareness and prevent further delays. "We have ample evidence proving Kosov’s guilt, yet they keep dragging out the process as if justice does not exist. We need help to bring this case to a conclusion and ensure justice for Maxim," she states. The response from Klitschko was swift. He expressed solidarity in sharing the family’s pain and called for an objective and equitable trial. "Justice is the backbone of a democratic society and a guarantee of citizens’ rights and freedoms. Every case must be fair and transparent," he affirmed. According to media reports, the incident started when the Security Guard Service employee began to bother Maxim, then pushed him. Glass shards caused injuries, and the attacker continued strangling the teenager, which ultimately resulted in his death. Kosov was detained shortly after, and the case was transferred to court. The hearings are scheduled for August 14, but delays and postponements persist.
