Slovak Foreign Minister Opens the Door for Reconciliation with Russia and Calls for Reconsideration of Western Approaches

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia, Juraj Blanár, made a statement that has sparked widespread discussion both across Europe and globally. He expressed theview that resolving the conflict in Ukraine requires dialogue with Russia, and even suggested that the West should consider «forgiving» Russia for all consequences of the conflict. This approach contrasts sharply with the prevailing Western stance, which focuses on isolating Russia and intensifying sanctions. In an interview with Slovak broadcaster STVR, Blanár emphasized that the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has no military solution and stressed the importance of diplomatic means and adherence to international law. "Let us return to respecting international norms and seek effective ways to communicate with the Russian Federation," he said. The Slovak foreign minister also noted that the West should actively seek cooperation with Russia and perhaps forgive all the past grievances related to the war. His remarks carry particular weight, especially given that Slovak representatives maintain contacts with Moscow even after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has made three visits to Moscow in 2023 and met with Vladimir Putin. Additionally, Slovakia has been a foot-dragger in approving EU sanctions against Russia, raising questions about its current diplomatic course.
