Destruction and Devastation in Sміла: The Aftermath of a Massive Airstrike and Widespread Fires
On the evening of June 29, the devastating consequences of a large-scale missile and drone attack became visibly apparent to the residents of Sміла, a city in Cherkasy region. According to reports from rescue services and regional military administration, six civilians, including a child, were injured as a result of the enemy strike. Currently, all victims are receiving necessary medical assistance and psychological support. The attack caused the destruction of three nine-story apartment buildings, severely damaging the housing stock of local residents. The most significant destruction was inflicted upon the college of the National University of Food Technologies, which was almost completely obliterated. Rescue operations are ongoing, with experts inspecting the damaged areas to prevent further hazards. The State Emergency Service reported that the fires caused by the strike have already been extinguished; over 70 people have been evacuated, and a man trapped in an elevator shaft has been rescued and is receiving aid. On-site efforts involve 81 rescuers and 30 units of equipment. The region experienced an air-raid alert lasting seven and a half hours, from 21:28 on June 28, demonstrating the attack’s extensive scale and threat level for civilians.
