Zelensky has appointed a new judge of the Constitutional Court according to his quota

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has officially announced the appointment of Oleksandr Vodiannikov as a judge of the Constitutional Court of the country. The corresponding decree under number 438 was published on June 27 on the official page of the head of state. This decision is part of the personnel policy of the president, who has his own quota in the composition of judges of the Constitutional Court - an important institution that determines the constitutionality of laws and regulatory legal acts in the state. Vodiannikov has so far acted as a coordinator of OSCE projects in Ukraine, was actively involved in the sphere of civil society and legal issues. His candidacy has caused an ambiguous reaction in society and among human rights circles, because the appointment to the Constitutional Court is a strategically important event that can affect the balance of power in this judicial institution. According to official information, decree No. 438 contains all the necessary legal formalities for his appointment. By making this personnel move, Zelensky confirmed his intentions to increase his quota in the Constitutional Court, which usually arouses public interest and sometimes criticism from opponents and experts in the field of justice. Earlier, the media reported that the appointment of judges to the Constitutional Court is regulated by a complex procedure that involves coordination with various branches of government, as well as compliance with strict independence criteria. However, the political will of the leadership became the decisive factor in this case as well. In general, this personnel change is part of the president’s broader policy of reforming the judicial system and ensuring control over the country’s constitutional jurisdiction. Society and the legal community are eagerly awaiting the first assessments of the newly appointed judge’s work in the context of future key decisions of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.
