Orban accused the EU of lying about Ukraine’s accession: “Their promises are impossible”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban sharply criticized the leadership of the European Union, accusing it of creating unrealistic and unattainable expectations regarding the prospects of Ukraine's accession to the European community. According to the head of the Hungarian government, Brussels is deliberately misleading Ukrainians, playing out promises to them that are completely unrealistic and unattainable under the current circumstances. As reported by "European Truth" with reference to the resource 444.hu, Viktor Orban once again expressed his destructive position regarding the prospects of Ukraine's membership in the EU, emphasizing that such a decision could have serious unexpected consequences. In his opinion, by offering Ukraine a quick accession to the European community, European leaders are actually agreeing to "accept war," which in itself is a threat and a challenge to the stability of the region. During his speech, Orban stressed that due to the pandemic of war and uncertainty on the front, it is difficult to determine the clear boundaries of Ukraine's territory and population. "Where are its borders? The population has fled, and we don't even know how many remain. This is a constantly changing situation and has no fixed framework," the prime minister said, noting that this creates uncertainty and chaos around future relations with this country. At the same time, Orban once again emphasized that before joining the EU, Ukraine should first receive security guarantees through NATO membership, which he calls the only safe way to ensure its sovereignty and stability. In his opinion, it is impossible to quickly and directly integrate the country into the European community without any military guarantees, as this would pose an additional threat to Russia and further increase the risks of escalating the conflict. "This situation is crazy. We must speak honestly and openly about the real situation. We cannot deceive a country that is fighting for its future. Brussels and EU representatives are once again fooling Ukrainians, promising them something unrealistic. This is another example of manipulation and unscrupulous policy around the prospects of Ukrainian membership in the European community," Orban said, once again emphasizing his position on the inconsistency of Brussels's intentions with reality and intentions towards Ukraine. Before this, this conflict factor had already manifested itself at the official level. Hungary, referring to the results of its propaganda referendum, announced that it had allegedly "stopped" the process of Ukraine's accession to the EU. Before the recent EU summit, it was not possible to reach a single decision on further rapprochement with Kyiv due to Hungary's veto. This caused a significant inhibitory effect on the European integration process of the Ukrainian state, complicating all negotiations and discussions. Thus, Orban's position and Hungary's foreign policy in this context once again confirm that the process of Ukraine's European integration is currently under great pressure and directly depends on the political and geopolitical interests of individual member states. The EU summit still has unresolved issues regarding the scale of support for Ukraine and its integration prospects, in which Hungary's silent but powerful veto plays a role, completely stopping the movement towards a common European goal.
