Zelensky stressed that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is a mutual need, although this prospect remains unattainable at the moment
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky once again emphasized that Ukraine's accession to NATO is necessary for both sides, because it is Ukraine that is able to significantly strengthen the Alliance, having modern technologies, weapons and experience of many years of struggle. However, he admitted that - due to the current political situation and military situation on the front - the prospect of Ukraine's rapid accession to the organization remains very distant. Instead, according to the head of the Ukrainian state, it is the possibility of creating a joint alliance there, where Kyiv would become a reliable partner with powerful potential, that is of utmost importance. During an interview with Sky News, Zelensky emphasized that the long path of struggle allowed Ukrainians to gain valuable experience, which should prove its value to the Alliance. "Behind our shoulders are decades of war and trials. This is not only a military confrontation, but also economic, information and cyber security, a struggle for survival within the country. We have gone through many difficult trials - from cyber attacks to energy attacks, and this experience has turned us into a reliable and compatible ally," Zelensky noted. The President emphasizes that for Ukraine, NATO membership is a matter of mutual benefit and necessity. "Our potential and experience are valuable for joint defense, and at the same time - what is important - Ukrainians strive to be part of this security system. NATO without Ukraine will not be integral and strong," he is convinced. However, Zelensky recognizes the reality of today and says that becoming a member of the Organization at the moment is currently unrealistic. "We understand that this cannot be done in a short time, as we have said many times before. At the same time, we need to work on strengthening our defense capabilities and maintaining close relations with the Alliance," he said. The Ukrainian head of state also expressed concern about the pace of defense spending growth in NATO member states, which he considers insufficiently fast, given the growing threat from Russia, which right now has the ability to build a powerful potential for possible aggressive actions. "If they invested more in their defense, our chances of repelling would be much higher," he noted. In conclusion, Zelensky said that he intends to take advantage of the opportunity and participate in bilateral meetings in The Hague during the NATO summit, in particular with US President Donald Trump. He sees this as a chance to discuss Ukraine's security and further deepen cooperation. Another important diplomatic window awaits him – the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, which, according to experts, should be both a demonstration of unity and a test for the organization. Considering all these issues, the Ukrainian leader calls on NATO colleagues to more actively support Ukraine's security and prepare for potential challenges in the future.
