Information source - "European Truth" with reference to the press service of the Council of Europe. It is important to note that the decision to sign this historic document was confirmed after the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe unanimously agreed on Tuesday to sign the agreement, which includes provisions on the statute of the future tribunal. According to Alain Berset, this tribunal was created to hold accountable those who used force in violation of the UN Charter and international law, committing crimes and criminal acts during the Russian aggression against Ukraine. The Secretary General of the Council of Europe emphasized that this tribunal will not operate according to the standards of double morality - it will aim to ensure justice for the victims of aggression and emphasize that impunity for international crimes is unacceptable. "This tribunal is an important step to confirm that the security and stability of Europe will not be achieved by silence or ignoring crimes, but through the principles of the rule of law, justice and responsibility," Berset concluded. The Ukrainian delegation had previously reported on the content and importance of the signing of the agreement. This was the logical conclusion of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's first official visit to the Council of Europe on June 25. The signing of the agreement is expected to take place on the day of the visit, emphasizing the political and diplomatic importance of this step. Let us recall that the legal basis for the creation of the Special Tribunal was laid back on May 14, when the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe officially launched the procedure for its creation. Before that, on May 9, a political summit was held in Lviv, at which this process was supported by an intergovernmental agreement. All these steps are part of a broad international effort to punish those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
