Ukraine maintains control over a key territory in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, in particular in the Glushkovsky district, where approximately 90 square kilometers remain under our protection as of today

This was reported by Commander Syrsky at a recent meeting with journalists, who spoke without the presence of representatives from media outlets such as "Ukrainska Pravda" and "Ukrinform." According to Syrsky, Ukrainian military forces intensified their actions in the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region as early as April 2024, and these efforts play an important role in deterring the Russian offensive. Specifically, he emphasized that the Russian armed forces are in a state of significant redeployment: about 60,000 personnel, including two airborne assault divisions, separate airborne and marine infantry brigades, have been redirected to new combat areas to strengthen offensive groups in the directions of Pokrovsky, Toretsky, Lyman, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. In the military’s view, this move was prompted by the Russian command’s plan to accelerate the pace of the offensive and break through Ukrainian defenses. However, Ukrainian units responded with active and decisive presence in the Glushkovsky district, which clearly disrupted the Russians’ plans for a large-scale advance. Syrsky noted that our troops control about 90 km² in this part of Kursk—and such actions are preventive and aimed at deterring possible Russian attacks. According to him, one Russian brigade moving toward the Pokrovsky direction was forced to return to the Kursk sector due to our significant resistance. Currently, approximately 10,000 Russian servicemen are fighting on this section, engaging in active combat in the Glushkovsky district. Regarding earlier events, it is worth noting that on April 26, 2024, Russian leadership was informed about the so-called "completed" operation to liberate the last settlement in the Kursk region—Gornalya. At the same time, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces denied this report, emphasizing that the Russian command’s claims of the completion of hostilities in the Kursk region do not reflect the actual situation and do not correspond to the real coordinates of events. Ukraine continues to hold the defense and control key strategic points, preventing the expansion of Russian advances and contributing to regional stabilization. Therefore, the situation in Kursk remains complex but under our control, and active military operations continue to deter the aggressor along this part of the Russian border. Ukrainian forces demonstrate their ability not only to defend but also to carry out effective counteroffensives, which are crucial for the overall defense strategy of the state.
