This happened in the state of Santa Catarina, in a popular area for flights known for its picturesque canyons and natural beauty. Preliminary data indicate that at the time of the accident, there were 22 passengers and crew on board the balloon. The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, June 21, in an area that is widely visited by tourists, air sports enthusiasts, and residents of the city of Praia Grande, which has gained fame as the "canyon capital" and a center for air sports in the country. According to initial reports, a fire broke out urgently in this region, rapidly engulfing the balloon, causing it to ignite in the air and then fall. Witnesses posted videos on social media clearly showing the moment of the balloon catching fire: the footage captures bright tongues of flame covering the envelope, and a few seconds later, the balloon begins burning with a bright flame from a distance. The videos also recorded the moment the basket with passengers fell, crashing to the ground with a loud roar and the sound of metal impacts. Unfortunately, as a result of the crash, several people sustained serious injuries, and the number of victims has not yet been officially confirmed — it is only known that among them are individuals suffering from various degrees of trauma. In total, there were 22 people on board the hot air balloon — passengers and crew. Official authorities have already begun investigating the incident, but many details remain unknown, including the causes of the fire and the fall. The crash site is located near a medical point, where, according to preliminary information, the moment of the balloon’s combustion was recorded. This is not the first tragedy in the world related to hot air balloon flights. A notable case occurred in 2023 in Switzerland, when a large fire broke out on an aircraft, resulting in a fall and injuries to seven people. At that time, the cause of the disaster also remained uncertain, and the investigation was prolonged. It cannot be denied that hot air balloon flights have their charm and appeal; however, discipline, the technical condition of the vessels, and strict safety standards must remain in the focus of those responsible for organizing and controlling flights. The tragedy in Brazil is yet another reminder of the importance of safety and vigilant attention to aeronautical matters, since human life and health are the highest values that must not be put at risk. Initially, investigations into the causes of the fire are ongoing. Experts are already expressing their assumptions regarding possible technical malfunctions or human factors that could have caused the fire. In this regard, authorities and air service providers are currently strengthening control and inspections of aircraft to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
