Ukraine demonstrates its resilience and commitment to protecting the rights of every soldier captured and held in captivity
As part of another phase of the large-scale prisoner exchange, Ukrainian defense forces shared touching footage of the return of severely wounded and seriously ill defenders who have long served on the front lines. This once again confirms that the fight is not only for territory but also for human lives, and serves as evidence of a restrained yet persistent move towards justice. According to Major Andrii Yusov, Deputy Commander of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, over 90% of Ukrainian servicemen returned from Russian captivity have, based on survey results, endured systematic abuse and torture. This number is staggering and infuriating, indicating the scale and brutality of the violations faced by our defenders. Almost all of them experienced severe mistreatment at the hands of Russian occupiers at various stages of their detention. This issue is not only a matter for internal investigations but also a responsibility of the international community to ensure appropriate levels of humanitarian protection. According to international standards, human rights systems must be equally firm and mandatory for everyone, regardless of status or the country of aggressor. The Deputy Head of the Coordination Headquarters emphasized that Ukraine fully complies with all international standards and norms, including the Geneva Conventions, which regulate the treatment of prisoners of war. Conditions created in detention facilities and centers where Russian prisoners are held meet international requirements, confirming their legality and humane approach. This is a vital component of the diplomatic and humanitarian efforts aimed at defending human rights even in the most difficult conditions of war. Regarding future steps, the GUR representative confirmed that negotiations on continuing the exchange of prisoners are still ongoing. He stated that Ukraine is diligently working to implement the agreements reached in Istanbul to ensure the most effective and rapid return of soldiers home. This demonstrates a strategic, systematic approach to resolving the issue, which is an essential part of the country's broader strategic plan and humanitarian policy. This news once again underscores that the Ukrainian people do not give up, and will surely bring home their heroes and defenders. Amid a war that has been ongoing for many years, all Ukrainian communities, law enforcement agencies, and international institutions are united in their pursuit of legal and humanitarian justice. While negotiations continue, Ukrainian statehood and humanity remain unbreakable, proving to the world that “Ukraine is freedom” not only in words but through daily efforts to defend its people and independence.
