In the context of increasing tensions in Europe and the escalation of Russian military and hybrid operations in the Baltic Sea region, German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadeful issued a stark warning about the possible outbreak of open military confrontation in this strategically important zone. Speaking at the security conference in Kiel, the politician emphasized that the situation around the Baltic is becoming more and more tense and unstable, and the risk of military clash is more than real. According to Wadeful, today the region is transforming into a truly multifunctional battlefield and hybrid attack zone where Russian military and intelligence services actively employ a range of tactics aimed at destabilizing societies and undermining the military stability of NATO member countries. "The Baltic region is now not only a strategically significant area but also a zone where the likelihood of military conflict is bubbling. Russia's hybrid activity, including the use of underwater and surface forces to carry out diversions and provocations, creates new security challenges," the diplomat noted. He paid particular attention to what is called Moscow's "shadow fleet," which, according to him, is disguised in front by ordinary ships but is actively engaged in sabotage activities. Specifically, there are reports of deliberate damage to underwater internet cable lines and power grids, undermining the region’s infrastructure and security. Moreover, Wadeful stated that Russian military ships behave aggressively, violating borders and causing alarm among NATO countries, while Russian military aircraft regularly breach the airspace of Baltic states, collectively increasing regional tension. "These hybrid operations and military provocations are deliberately aimed at destabilizing the situation and testing our military and political capacities to respond to these challenges," Wadeful emphasized. "Understanding the strategic importance of the Baltic region for Russia, we must be prepared for any scenario and have a strong, flexible defense to contain any destabilization." He highlighted that Western countries, including Germany, are actively implementing policies of response and increasing military presence in the region to deter potential aggression from Russia. "We are determined to defend every meter of our territory and to ensure the security of our allies within NATO. Even during this challenging period, we remain united in our efforts to prevent escalation of the conflict," the minister added. The background of the tension in the region is complex and multifaceted. Recently, Polish specialists reported frequent GPS signal disruptions over the Baltic Sea, associated with actions by Russian military structures. Similarly, the Baltic states are conducting heightened exercises: Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are actively developing security plans, including preparing military and medical facilities for a possible escalation of conflict. In analytical publications, experts stress the importance of strengthening defense capabilities and readiness for any scenario, as the current situation around Russia creates additional challenges for ensuring stability not only in the Baltic region but throughout Europe.
