The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, confirmed the intentions of G7 leaders to intensify pressure on Russia during discussions dedicated to the situation in Ukraine
According to him, at the summit in Kananskis, held from June 15 to 17 in the Alberta province, the heads of states and governments of the "Big Seven" expressed their firm support for the efforts of the U.S. administration to achieve a just, lasting, and stable peace in Ukraine. At the same time, they demonstrated willingness to thoroughly explore all possible options aimed at increasing pressure on Russia. This statement became one of the key outcomes of the public discussions and was published after the summit concluded. It clearly outlines the sentiments of the leaders, who seek not only to support a diplomatic course but also do not exclude the use of tough measures, including financial sanctions, to force Moscow to cease its aggression against Ukraine. The head of the Canadian government emphasized that G7 leaders unanimously recognize Ukraine’s commitment to an unconditional ceasefire and agree that Russia should take appropriate steps toward de-escalating the conflict. The meeting in Kananskis was dedicated not only to discussing the war but also to exploring long-term strategies for supporting the Ukrainian state. Therefore, the leaders organized separate talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. They focused on the need to strengthen defense capabilities, as well as on recovery and reconstruction projects in the affected regions. Priorities include providing additional financial aid to bolster Ukraine’s defense budget and planning for the recovery of infrastructure and housing sectors. Regarding political reconciliation in the perception of the situation, it is worth noting that, according to Reuters, the "G7" did not issue a joint statement on the Ukraine war due to opposition from certain members, including the United States. Sources indicate that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who presided over the G7, plans to publish a separate official document that is not signed by other leaders — thus attempting to maintain unity within the internal process while expressing his own positions and support for Ukraine separately from other countries. A significant update is that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shortened his visit to Canada and has already returned to Ukraine. This either reflects internal dynamics in the negotiations or changes in the diplomatic schedule of the Ukrainian leader. Although no final clarifications have been provided regarding what exactly prompted Zelenskyy to adjust his plans, it is clear that high-level cooperation goals and the further strengthening of support for Ukraine remain central topics for diplomatic efforts. Overall, the outcomes of this year’s G7 summit demonstrate the firm intention of the international community to increase pressure on Russia through diplomacy, economic sanctions, and security assistance to Ukraine. Meanwhile, the theme of peace and stability remains a primary priority for all participants of the forum.
