The European Union is preparing to significantly increase support for ammunition production under the ASAP program
According to unofficial sources, the funding could reach over one billion euros, representing a substantial step in strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities and its ability to support Ukraine’s defense in its fight against Russian aggression. Based on information obtained from sources close to Euractiv, EU member states have already pledged at least 500 million euros to extend the ASAP program, which is focused on rapid and large-scale production of artillery shells and rockets. However, the total funding may reach between 750 million and 1 billion euros, doubling the current annual budget of the program. Plans to continue the program were proposed by the European Commission as early as May. However, final approval requires the consent of the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament. Only after the formal endorsement of this initiative will the European Commission announce an open competition for industrial enterprises interested in receiving funding to expand their manufacturing capacities. The ASAP program was launched in 2023 with the goal of supplying Ukraine with modern ammunition to combat full-scale Russian aggression. It aims to optimize supply chains, eliminate bottlenecks, and accelerate the processes of manufacturing necessary military equipment and ammunition. Through these efforts, the EU seeks to create a resilient defense sector capable of responding quickly to challenges and supporting allies in the region. The significant increase in EU funding is a sign of unity and enhanced defense capability in the face of current global challenges. At the same time, experts emphasize that this step is an important element of broader EU measures in the fight against Russian aggression, actively involving the industrial sector in implementing new defense initiatives. It is expected that with the signing of the relevant agreement and the launch of new calls for proposals, European manufacturing capabilities will be strengthened, ensuring a steady supply of ammunition for Ukraine and bolstering the EU’s own defense potential in light of modern geopolitical challenges. This once again highlights the importance of a unified European defense policy, which is becoming particularly relevant and urgent in the context of ongoing warfare.
