Vladimir Zelensky warns of new Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure: potential threats to nuclear power plants
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, made an important address yesterday, in which he reported on the increasing likelihood of new attacks by Russia on the country's critical energy infrastructure. He paid particular attention to possible threats to nuclear generation facilities, which play a decisive role in ensuring the country's energy supply and security. Zelensky noted that following a recent meeting with military leaders, representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine, and high-ranking government officials, existing risks and measures to protect key facilities from Russian strikes were discussed. According to him, there are no signs that Moscow is considering halting hostilities or moving toward diplomatic negotiations. On the contrary, in the context of escalating conflicts in the Middle East and the international community's focus on other crisis spots, maneuvering room remains for the Kremlin. "Russia continues to plan attacks against Ukraine’s energy system. These could be less noticeable in the global media because the world’s attention is currently focused on the Middle East. Our partners' intelligence sources provide a clear picture of enemy plans," emphasized the Ukrainian president. At the same time, Zelensky highlighted that during the meeting, detailed discussions were held regarding measures to protect nuclear facilities. Specifically, the Ukrainian Minister of Energy transmitted relevant information to international organizations, including the IAEA, and the head of Ukraine's Ministry of Energy informed his American counterpart about the data shared. "Regarding information about a possible new Russian attack on nuclear power plants, it has been relayed to our partners at the IAEA and in the USA, and analysis of this data is ongoing," the head of state underscored. Vladimir Zelensky added that during the meeting, reports from intelligence and military leadership were also heard. Details of these discussions remain confidential, but according to the President, the results obtained will help strengthen defenses and response capabilities to potential threats. In addition to protecting energy facilities, the agenda also included addressing the consequences of the recent Russian strike on Poltava region. Zelensky reported that the current state of Russian missile and drone capabilities was analyzed, and tasks to enhance Ukraine’s air defense system were outlined. In this context, it is emphasized that Ukraine is making every effort to prevent future strikes and to minimize destruction and casualties. Overall, the possible escalation scenarios from Russia remain under the watch of Ukrainian military and intelligence services. Corresponding steps to bolster defense potential are already being implemented, including the operation of early warning systems and strengthening shelters and air and missile defense infrastructure. Zelensky called on the global community and allies to stay vigilant and support Ukraine in these frontline realities, as the situation remains tense and extremely challenging. The public and experts actively discuss potential new challenges for Ukraine's energy system, as well as the need to intensify international cooperation to ensure the security of key facilities. At the same time, the government is working on developing Ukraine’s air defense to prevent or at least minimize any new attacks by the aggressor on the country’s critical infrastructure.
