More than 50 shellings in a single day: a new wave of violence and destruction has erupted in Sumy region

On June 12, the Russian Federation forces once again intensified their activity in Sumy region, conducting over 50 shellings across various districts of the oblast. This became one of the most intense attacks in recent times, affecting at least 25 settlements in 11 territorial communities. Two local residents, aged 88 and 57, were injured during this wave of aggression, and significant damage to civilian infrastructure and private homes was recorded. According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, from the morning of June 12 until nearly the morning of June 13, Russian troops carried out large-scale shellings using a variety of weapons. Over 50 ammunition and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were launched. Specifically, there were 35 strikes with rocket artillery, more than ten with guided air bombs, and 20 VOGs dropped from drones. In addition, FPV drones were used — these devices are employed for precise strikes and induce particular fear among local residents. The situation has worsened in the Sumy and Shostka districts, where the occupiers were most active. It is important to note that these are not merely random shots but systematic attacks involving different types of weaponry. As a result of the attacks, women in the Mykolaiv community received splinter injuries — two women aged 88 and 57. They were hospitalized and are receiving necessary medical care. Fortunately, there were no fatalities in other settlements, though the damage remains significant. In particular, in Seredino-Budska community, a private house was destroyed due to shelling. This is another loss for local residents who had to abandon their homes after the destruction. In the Putivl community, a farm building was damaged, creating additional difficulties for the local economy and everyday life of residents. Analysts and military experts note that these shellings are happening amid the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Russia’s Kursk region. Ukrainian military officials and observers point out that the situation in the region remains tense and unstable, with the movement of Russian troops toward the Ukrainian border indicating an intention by the occupiers to entrench themselves in captured territories or cause even greater destruction. The project "Are you advancing on Tyotkino? We are advancing on the pitfalls" provides a detailed analysis of the situation in Sumy region and explains how the approaching combat actions from the Russian side influence the regional situation and the city of Sumy itself. The article focuses on current developments, potential scenarios, and the reaction of Ukrainian defense forces. Overall, the current situation in Sumy region indicates increasing tension and a change in Russian tactics. Local authorities and residents remain constantly prepared for new challenges. Meanwhile, Ukrainian units continue to hold the line and assure their readiness to withstand increased aggression from the enemy. In general, this period in the region is difficult and anxious. The scale of shellings demonstrates Russia’s attempts to intimidate the population and destroy infrastructure potential to weaken Ukraine’s resistance. Therefore, it is crucial to stay informed about the developments and remain vigilant, as the war continues, and each day brings new challenges and losses.
