Zelensky warns: Russia intends to capture Odesa and break through to the borders with Moldova and Romania

On the day of the IV "Ukraine – Southeastern Europe" summit in Odesa, President Volodymyr Zelensky once again emphasized in his speech the seriousness of the Russian Federation’s military intentions regarding our country. The head of state detailed the Kremlin’s plans to advance in southern Ukraine and expand its aggressive territorial expansion to the borders with neighboring countries. According to him, Russia’s main strategic goal is the city of Odesa – an important seaport that is historically and economically significant for Ukraine as well as for the region as a whole. Zelensky reminded that Russia aims not only to destroy the city, which has become a symbol of our independence and modern Ukrainian identity, but also to threaten regional security potential. As such, the occupiers are focused on capturing this strategic object and expanding their presence in the south of the country. The president stressed that this scenario is part of a broader plan — to break through to the borders with Moldova and Romania, creating new threats to the security not only of Ukraine but also of Southeastern Europe. That is why the issue of protecting this part of the country is a priority and of utmost importance for the Ukrainian authorities: "We now need a strong defense, an environment capable of defending our independence and territorial integrity. But at the same time, we need long-term security guarantees that would convince any aggressor that such an attack will never happen again." Zelensky called on summit participants and international partners to focus not only on current defense measures but also on creating a security guarantees system for Ukraine that would operate after the war. He emphasized that the issue of security and stability will be a key factor in the post-war rebuilding of our state. "We need modern air defense and cybersecurity tools capable of responding quickly and effectively to any threats. We need to strengthen our agreements, develop military infrastructure, upgrade weapons, and security standards to maximize our defense capabilities," he emphasized. Zelensky urged attendees to concentrate on practical steps to strengthen the country’s security because only a comprehensive and robust system will guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence in the future. This appeal came at a time when the Ukrainian army is actively preparing for the defense of the southern flank, including through the acquisition of modern weapons and equipment from international partners and allied countries. Zelensky stresses that only coordinated efforts and long-term defense strategies can prevent devastating scenarios from repeating and help preserve peace on Ukrainian soil.
