This proposal came as a surprise to the public and sparked widespread discussion both in political circles and among commentators. At the stadium’s opening ceremony, the Belarusian leader, who had recently returned from a trip to China, initiated this idea. According to Lukashenko, during his visit to the People’s Republic of China, he received an unexpected gift—two models: one a scale project of an international-level swimming pool and football stadium. He stated that at that time, Chinese President Xi Jinping personally declared that the construction of these facilities would be a gift to the Belarusian people. “Initially, I could hardly believe it because I know China and its leadership—they don’t speak without reason. But when I looked at the models and started to understand what we have— it became clear: there is something more here. Moreover, the head of the country personally confirmed that this project is a gift,” Lukashenko explained, adding that it was then that he began to realize the scale and significance of this initiative. According to him, the funding and construction of the facilities proceeded swiftly. A short time later, a new football stadium appeared in Minsk—modern and meeting international standards—as well as a training pool with high-quality equipment. “We are officially opening this stadium and pool, which will now serve our athletes and all sports enthusiasts,” Lukashenko added. A particularly striking detail of the ceremony was a sculptural composition near the entrance to the stadium, depicting Belarusian and Chinese football players in the midst of a game. On this occasion, Lukashenko also proposed installing a monument to his Chinese colleague in Minsk. “Given that only thanks to Xi Jinping’s efforts and support we received this modern stadium—I believe that a monument to our long-time friend and strategic partner should stand here,” he emphasized. This initiative elicited mixed reactions in public and political spheres. Some politicians welcomed the gesture, viewing it as a symbol of strong friendly ties between the two countries. Others expressed concerns about further political intentions and the possible use of such initiatives for propaganda purposes. Overall, Lukashenko’s proposal to erect a monument to Xi Jinping became a vivid highlight in the recent history of Belarus-China relations and may influence future diplomatic and cultural dialogue between the two states. Regardless of the reaction, it clearly demonstrates that Minsk and Beijing are eager to develop their partnership and show mutual support at a public level.
