Zelensky Expresses Uncertainty Regarding Russians’ Readiness for Constructive Talks in Istanbul
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky openly stated that he is currently unsure whether the Russian delegation will be capable and prepared for productive and constructive participation in the upcoming negotiations in Istanbul. Ahead of the summit of the “Bucharest Nine” countries and the Nordic countries, which will take place in the Turkish capital, the Ukrainian leader emphasized that this event is of utmost importance for Ukraine due to a number of key issues that require discussion and resolution. In an interview with “European Pravda,” Zelensky reported that after a morning conversation with the country’s Defense Minister, he was informed about the preparations for the meetings in Istanbul. However, despite the attention paid to the process, he noted that from Ukraine’s side, there is some distrust regarding Russia’s readiness for a constructive dialogue: “I spoke with our Defense Minister early this morning — they are preparing for the meeting. Honestly, I am not confident that the Russians will be inclined toward productive negotiations. Nonetheless, we must always remain open to finding certain solutions and opportunities to reach agreements.” According to Zelensky, the main topics for discussion at the upcoming summit include several critically important issues for Ukraine. First and foremost is the urgent and unconditional ceasefire across the entire territory of the country, which is a key condition for further political processes and stabilization. Additionally, attention is given to the humanitarian aspect: the return of children abducted by Russia, who have been deported from Ukraine to temporarily occupied territories or to Russia itself, which causes deep pain and concern among Ukrainian society. No less important for Kyiv is the issue of liberating civilians, political prisoners, and journalists held in Russian captivity or in occupied territories, as well as ensuring their prompt return home. Zelensky emphasized that all these questions are a priority for Ukraine and require united efforts from the international community and directly involved parties. In the opinion of the Ukrainian president, the chances of reaching substantial agreements depend not only on the willingness of the Russian side but also on the readiness of international partners and organizers of the process to create favorable conditions for productive dialogue. He stressed that Ukraine and its allies will do everything possible to make these negotiations as effective as possible, but currently, Russia’s attitude remains uncertain. Overall, Volodymyr Zelensky called for a measured approach to the situation and warned that any agreements should involve not only negotiation but also a clear understanding that the Russian delegation must demonstrate a serious intent and readiness for constructive dialogue. At the same time, he reiterated that Ukraine remains open to seeking compromises, while warning that Russia’s unacceptable actions could prolong the process or even cause it to fall apart. It is expected that in the coming days, a series of high-level meetings will take place in Istanbul, during which the Ukrainian delegation hopes to receive concrete responses and guarantees regarding the future military and humanitarian situation. Zelensky himself emphasized that his team and international partners will remain vigilant and will not allow the country’s situation to stay in uncertainty, affirming that security and peace are non-negotiable priorities for Ukraine and the world.
