A nighttime tragedy occurred in Zhytomyr: an unknown man, using extreme violence, committed an act of blatant disregard for residents’ safety by throwing a grenade right outside a local supermarket, while passersby and shoppers reacted to the sudden explosion in shock
The incident took place late in the evening on May 30 and has already provoked widespread public and law enforcement reaction, as six people—aged from 22 to 42—were injured and urgently hospitalized with various degrees of trauma. According to the preliminary data from the Zhytomyr police, a report about an explosion on Mira Avenue was received around 11:30 p.m. During the initial investigative actions, law enforcement officials established that the unknown man, who seemingly was armed with an explosive device, threw it into a group of pedestrians and immediately fled the scene, leaving the residents in a state of shock and danger. The blast caused serious injuries to six Zhytomyr residents, including adult men, and their lives are now under the care of modern medical assistance. In connection with this tragic event, the police have opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 15 and Points 1 and 5 of Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—“attempted murder of two or more persons done in a manner dangerous to multiple lives.” Such actions are classified as exceptionally dangerous and suggest a possible deliberate malicious intent, which not only draws public condemnation but also requires the closest possible investigation by law enforcement agencies. At present, the investigation continues to establish the motives of the man, his identity, and all circumstances that contributed to the attack. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials understand that this incident is not only an act of aggression but also a challenge to the safety of all residents of the city. They are already working on locating the suspect and are intensifying security and control measures within the city to prevent similar situations from recurring in the future. The event has caused significant resonance in society, as such crimes, which pose a real threat to people’s lives, always traumatize the community and undermine the sense of security in the city. Law enforcement urges citizens to remain vigilant, report any suspicious actions, and actively assist in solving the case, because only through joint efforts can we stop such waves of violence. Currently, police information indicates that the offender is an unidentified man operating covertly with the intent to spread fear and chaos. Authorities are working on identifying him and understanding his motives. Such a brazen attack, which could serve as a message or demonstration of criminal intent, presents a very serious challenge for the entire law enforcement system of Zhytomyr and Ukraine as a whole.
