Washington considers the possibility of ceasing participation in peace negotiations with Russia if the aggressor country continues its military aggression against Ukraine, announced Acting Deputy Permanent Representative of the USA to the UN Security Council John Kelly during a meeting of the international body
This notable statement sent a signal to Moscow: Washington will not lose the opportunity to press Russia for peace, but only if Russia halts its military actions, since an ongoing war that has not yet stopped could lead to a complete reevaluation of American policy regarding conflict resolution. During his speech, the diplomat emphasized that the United States is open to constructive negotiations aimed at ending the war; however, they will only take this step if there is good will and genuine desire from the Russian leadership to sit at the negotiating table. "We are ready to support a peaceful process, but this support depends on whether Russia demonstrates a real willingness to engage in dialogue. If it continues the war, we — like many of our partners — will be forced to reconsider our stance and adjust our efforts," Kelly clearly warned. He stressed that the USA advocates for honest and transparent diplomacy that will allow both sides to find common ground and achieve peace. "We insist that any meetings and negotiations be conducted with maximum honesty and good faith, because without this, reaching the cherished peace is impossible," added the American diplomat. Additionally, he highlighted that the US supports a joint initiative for peaceful conflict resolution, reiterating the position of both current and previous U.S. presidents, including Donald Trump, who emphasized a desire for cooperation with Russia in this sphere. Kelly also mentioned that the current American administration is convinced that the best and only viable outcome for Russia is to sign a genuine peace agreement. "President Vladimir Putin must understand that ending this destructive war requires taking responsibility and making a step toward peace. This is the key to restoring stability and security in the region," he underlined. In concluding his statement, Kelly called on both parties — Russia and Ukraine — to make a large-scale but also extremely difficult and responsible choice in favor of peace. "If one side refuses or is unable to take this step, the responsibility for the subsequent consequences will rest directly on its shoulders," summarized the US representative, prepared for a possible change in diplomatic course in case of further escalation of the conflict. This message serves as a signal to Moscow and Kyiv that Washington is open to reevaluating its position in diplomacy and ready to act according to circumstances, since the return to a peace strategy depends solely on the actions of both sides on the battlefield and in diplomatic negotiations.
