Ukraine welcomes the potential involvement of Donald Trump in possible negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, says Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha

According to him, a positive perception by the Ukrainian side would emerge if, prior to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with Kremlin head Vladimir Putin, former American leader Donald Trump joins, with the intention to play an active role in resolving the conflict. This diplomatic outlook was expressed by Sybiha during a joint press conference with his Turkish colleague Hakan Fidan, held on May 30 in Kyiv. The deputy minister emphasized that on the eve of this important dialogue, Ukrainian diplomacy and international partners have already taken a significant step — several key agreements were reached in Istanbul. These included discussions on the exchange of prisoners of war, defining the conditions and parameters of a possible ceasefire, as well as starting work on the format, location, and timing of a high-level meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia. According to Sybiha, the Ukrainian side would welcome this meeting, ideally in an expanded format involving a broad circle of international participants — including former U.S. President Donald Trump. Talks about such a possibility have gained additional political weight amid recent statements by Ukrainian leadership. On May 28, President Volodymyr Zelensky, in response to a journalist’s question, expressed his readiness for a summit involving the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, and the United States in any format, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and finding compromises within the framework of international negotiations. At the same time, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted that such a meeting is entirely possible but only with prior agreement within delegations from both sides and with the consent of international partners. Thus, the prospect of involving Donald Trump in a possible summit in Ukraine has become a new focus in diplomatic disputes and diplomatic games surrounding the resolution of the conflict. Although the initiation of such negotiations has not yet been legally or politically formalized, Ukrainian politicians and diplomats emphasize that Trump’s participation could influence not only the dynamics of negotiations but also provide a significant political boost in the global context. Overall, the future potential meeting involving a world figure around the Ukrainian-Russian conflict sets the stage for new diplomatic maneuvers and attempts to find the long-awaited solution that could reduce tensions and foster peace. However, for now, these are only the most optimistic scenarios, which evoke a range of reactions — from enthusiasm to skepticism — among the international community and Ukrainian society.
