On Thursday, Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor and one of Europe's most influential politicians, made an important statement amid rising tensions between the European Union and the U.S. administration. His words came in response to a request from former U.S. Vice President Joe DiVincenzo Vents, who in Munich at the end of February harshly criticized European countries for allegedly undermining freedom of speech and democracy. This statement echoed broader discussions about Europe's role in the modern world, its ability, and willingness to defend its fundamental values. During the ceremony awarding the prestigious Charlemagne Prize to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Merz emphasized that Europe is ready, if necessary, to stand up against any challenges and fight for its centuries-old values—freedom and democracy. It is also important to note that the idea of a European collective defense and human rights protection is increasingly becoming the foundation for new political decisions, demonstrating the continent's commitment to act as a unified team in times of crisis. Referring to Vents' speech in Munich, Merz pointed out that Europe's response must not be just a declaration, but a strong and convincing one. He quoted Vents, who posed a question to Europeans: "What are we fighting for together?" In his view, the answer should be clear, grounded in deep historical experience and determination. "We Europeans do not just talk about values, we stand up for them. Freedom and democracy are not abstract ideas, but real values we have fought for and continue to fight for today. It is a century of historical experience, trials and challenges, achievements and achievements that have proved: these values are worth fighting for to the end, even if it means going into open combat," Merz emphasized. It is particularly relevant that the Chancellor's words came at a time when the world is watching new challenges—namely the war in Ukraine, economic sanctions, and political tensions. Merz emphasized that the policies of Germany and other European countries should be proactive and consistent in supporting unity and strengthening the common European identity. The Chancellor pointed out that Germany will not remain on the sidelines in the process of strengthening the European Union. According to him, a new spirit of unity, European solidarity, and a shared goal—the protection and development of European values—are needed today, regardless of external challenges. He welcomed the initiative to support Ukraine in its fight and recalled the importance of partnership relations with the United Kingdom, with whom Europe has recently renewed trade and defense ties. Thus, Merz's words aim to remind that modern Europe must be united in its commitment to democratic values, regardless of external pressure or internal challenges. It is not just a declaration but a strategic stance to defend the values that ensure stability and prosperity for the continent in the 21st century.
