Support for Ukraine on the European Continent: Over 58% of EU citizens approve of supplying weapons and military equipment
According to a new Eurobarometer survey, nearly six out of ten citizens of European Union countries express support for supplying Ukraine with weapons and military equipment to counter Russian aggression. This indicates a broad public consensus regarding the EU’s active position in assisting Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s military aggression. The data shows that 59% of Europeans support the purchase and delivery of arms to a country fighting for its independence and territorial integrity. At the same time, most Europeans also approve of other responses to the war, including support for refugees and sanctions against Russia. Specifically, 80% of respondents agree to accept people fleeing the war into EU countries, and over 76% endorse financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Additionally, a quarter of those surveyed (72%) support the introduction of economic sanctions against the Russian government, companies, and private individuals, believing that these measures have a significant impact on deterring the aggressor. Equally important is Europeans’ support for granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership. According to the survey, 60% of Ukrain’s applicants back this initiative, while 59% of EU citizens are favorable toward financing the procurement and supply of military equipment for Ukraine. Overall, issues of war and security remain at the forefront of European society’s attention. For example, 27% of respondents identify Russian aggression against Ukraine as the most pressing issue today; other important topics are the international situation (24%) and regional security (20%). Nearly 8 out of 10 Europeans (77%) believe that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine poses a threat to the security of the entire EU. Interestingly, such attitudes toward the conflict are also observed beyond Europe. For instance, in the United States, there is also a high level of public support for Ukraine. According to recent surveys, about 60% of Americans believe that former President Donald Trump is not tough enough in his approach to deterring Putin. The majority of both Democratic and Republican supporters share the view that the Trump administration should strengthen military aid to Ukraine in support of its fight for independence and democratic values. In conclusion, public opinion in Europe and the US clearly supports active measures to assist Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. This reflects the development of global solidarity and awareness of the importance of joint actions to ensure security and stability in the European region and beyond.
