In response to the harsh and emotionally charged criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump concerning Russian leader Vladimir Putin, the official Kremlin issued a statement emphasizing the readiness of the Russian leadership to act in accordance with the country's interests amid the complex current situation surrounding Ukraine. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov reacted to Trump’s remarks, in which the latter expressed the opinion that Putin has “completely lost his mind” following recent air strikes on Ukraine. According to Peskov, while Russia acknowledges the emotional nature of such statements and recognizes that they may have been influenced by the tense situation, the main task of the Kremlin is to ensure the security of the country and protect its interests. “Of course, in this context, we are dealing with a very responsible moment, accompanied by intense emotional pressure on all involved parties. We are carefully monitoring all reactions but are making the decisions necessary to guarantee our nation's security,” Peskov told official media. At the same time, the spokesperson sought to de-escalate tensions, asserting that Russia faces its internal challenges as well as issues stemming from Ukraine, notably claiming that Kyiv had allegedly threatened high-ranking officials and foreign leaders invited to celebrate Victory Day in Moscow. According to Peskov, these threats prompted Russia to take appropriate measures, which explains the current tense situation. “President Putin makes the decisions necessary to ensure the country’s security, and we believe that all actions are driven by these very circumstances,” he emphasized. Background to the crisis: It’s worth recalling that just prior to these events, Trump expressed outright dissatisfaction with Vladimir Putin’s actions during a comment to journalists. He highlighted that he doesn’t understand the motives guiding the Russian leader and noted that Moscow’s actions cause concern within the global community. Subsequently, Trump posted a sharply worded message on his social media platform TRUE Social, calling Putin “completely insane” and warning that if Russia attempts to seize the entire Ukraine, it could lead to catastrophic consequences for Russia, including the potential fall of the regime. The Kremlin’s response clearly indicated that the Russian authorities take such accusations seriously and aim to demonstrate to the world that in Russia, decisions are solely driven by interests of security and stability. Simultaneously, the official rhetoric remains tough against the West and Ukraine, reflecting a continued effort to preserve internal and external unity amidst the challenges posed by the ongoing geopolitical crisis. Overall, the official Kremlin’s reaction reflects increasing tension and an attempt to find a balance around the Ukrainian conflict between internal political interests and international pressures. Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes negotiations and political discourse surrounding this situation only deepen the tension and showcase the “hard line” of Russian authorities in their confrontation with the West, amid rapid changes in the global security architecture.
