In memory of the heroic battles for Donetsk Airport: Zelensky introduces the Day of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces
President Volodymyr Zelensky recently decided to honor the courage and heroism of Ukrainian servicemen, particularly those who defended a strategic object during the fiercest battles of the war — Donetsk Airport. To that end, he signed a decree establishing a new professional holiday — the Day of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which will be celebrated annually on May 27. This decision marks an important step in strengthening the country’s military tradition and honoring those who perform complex and dangerous tasks on the front lines with dignity. According to the press service of the Special Operations Forces, the document officially comes into effect upon its publication. The decree bears deep symbolism and references the heroic events of 2014, when Ukrainian special forces soldiers, still in the process of forming as a separate structure, fought alongside other military units for control of Donetsk Airport. These battles, known as the “cyborgs,” entered the country’s history as one of the most brutal and at the same time most heroic pages of modern Ukrainian defense. According to the decree, on this day, Ukrainian servicemen and the public will honor the memory of everyone who did not return from the battlefield while defending Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity. It is important to note that the previous presidential decree from July 26, 2016, also dedicated to the Day of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces, has been repealed upon the entry into force of the new document. Additionally, a separate order by the commander of the Special Operations Forces, Major General Oleksandr Trepak, designates another memorial day — July 29 — to honor the fallen heroes of this special military structure. This day will symbolize resilience and remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives to ensure Ukraine’s security and future. Thanks to these decisions, the Ukrainian army has taken another step toward commemorating its heroes and strengthening military tradition, which is becoming increasingly important for the people fighting for their independence. This Day is intended to symbolize unity, bravery, and the unbreakable will of Ukrainian defenders, their fearless service to the state and the nation.
