The U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine, Lieutenant General Kit Kellogg, issued a sharp condemnation of Russia's recent massive attacks on Ukrainian territory, describing them as a gross violation of international norms and the Geneva Protocols that regulate the conduct of hostilities and the protection of civilian populations. His comments marked the first public response from a high-ranking U.S. official since the beginning of this new wave of aggression. According to reports published on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kellogg shared photographs from Kyiv, engulfed in flames and destruction, vividly illustrating the scale and brutality of the latest strikes. In his post, he sharply condemned Russia’s actions, emphasizing that they are not merely military tactics but a ruthless assault on innocent civilians. “This is Kyiv. Indiscriminately killing women and children in their own homes at night is one of the most heinous violations of the Geneva Protocols of 1977, which are aimed at ensuring the protection of civilians in conflict zones,” Kellogg wrote. “This is shameful. Those responsible for such actions must be held accountable. An immediate cessation of the killing and a ceasefire are imperative.” The special envoy’s comments serve as an important signal from the U.S., reaffirming Washington’s support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression. According to him, these attacks not only incite outrage but also underscore the urgent need to end hostilities, find a path to peace, and prevent further casualties. On the eve, Republican Member of the House of Representatives, moderate politician Don Bacon, called for more radical actions in response to Russian shelling. He proposed intensified support for Ukraine through increased armaments and sanctions. He stated that the U.S. and its allies should arm Ukraine to the teeth, impose maximum sanctions on Russia, and consider the possibility of confiscating over $300 billion in Russian assets abroad to balance power and ramp up pressure on the Kremlin. Equally significant was the appeal made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 25, urging the international community, including the U.S., not to remain on the sidelines. Zelensky emphasized the need to activate and strengthen pressure on Moscow to halt the escalation of violence and safeguard the civilian population. He stressed that the world must not remain silent and called for more decisive actions from those who can influence the situation.
