Russian shelling once again shook the peaceful life in Sumy region, causing human tragedies and destruction
On Friday, May 23, the border areas of Bilopillya were again targeted by aggression from Russian military forces, leaving local residents with feelings of anxiety and sorrow. As a result of this attack, a 76-year-old man was injured while tending to his backyard, when Russian shells struck his building. Medics promptly transported the wounded to the hospital, where he received the necessary surgical intervention. His condition is currently assessed as stable, but each day at the front line is experienced with tension and concern for the lives of peaceful residents. According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, the situation around Bilopillya remains tense. Enemy shelling continues daily, with Bilopillya community suffering the most. On the morning of the same day as the attack, new reports emerged about the consequences of the strike — one private house caught fire in the city. The impact was such that no one was inside at the time, allowing the loss of human life to be avoided — fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished. However, destruction and ruins are only the tip of the iceberg. According to local authorities, as of now, at least a dozen buildings of various purposes in Bilopillya and Vorozhba territorial communities have been destroyed or seriously damaged, including completely destroyed residential houses. These consequences of Russian aggressive pressure serve as an alarming signal to all residents that life in this region remains under serious threat. The issue of evacuation is especially urgent in this situation. As reported by the Military Administration, since early May, intensified evacuation efforts have been underway in two border communities — Bilopillya and Vorozhba. Currently, about three thousand residents remain in Bilopillya, although three more people left the city yesterday. In Vorozhba community, the population flow is significantly smaller — less than 800 people. Authorities urge residents of border villages and settlements not to delay and to evacuate in a timely manner, as the safety of every person is of the utmost importance. The situation in the region remains very tense, and uncertainty and anxiety persist among local residents. However, despite all difficulties, the authorities and medical workers are doing everything possible to help those affected as quickly as possible and to minimize the consequences of the war for the population. Residents, despite the challenging circumstances, show courage and resilience, hopeful for a swift end to this shameful conflict and the restoration of peace in Sumy region.
