Russian Forces Have Seized Positions in Sumy Region: DeepState Analytical Center Reports Significant Changes on the Frontline

According to the DeepState analytical project, the situation in northeastern Ukraine remains tense and concerning amid the full-scale war. Enemy forces, which previously operated mainly without clear clearance, have managed to solidify their positions in certain areas of Sumy region, particularly in the Veselia-Zhuravka-Novenkove-Basivka sector. This territory is now officially marked on maps as occupied, rather than as a "gray zone," indicating increased enemy control in the region. DeepState analysts emphasize that this part of Sumy Oblast was previously regarded as a "zone of uncertainty," as Ukrainian defenders, through their defense efforts, attempted to halt the advance of the occupiers using drones to target their movements and to concentrate troops in the region. However, the situation has now escalated to a new level—Russian occupants have managed to establish themselves on several key sectors, conducting operations involving infantry and rapid mobilization with quad bikes to quickly reach assault points. Reports indicate that major fighting has been concentrated along the Veselia-Zhuravka-Novenkove-Basivka corridor, with the aggressor's army actively trying to deepen its positions, including planning penetrations into Bilovodiv and maintaining tense control in Lokhny. Ukrainian units are engaged in active combat in these settlements, employing all available means to defend the territory. For example, in recent days, Ukrainian forces eliminated enemy infantry that entered Bilovodiv's houses, using drones operated by the State Border Guard Service, which resulted in the successful destruction of the adversary. It is noted that Ukrainian defense forces have managed to somewhat stabilize the situation and halt the rapid advance of Russian troops into the depth of the region. At the same time, daily and nightly Ukrainian soldiers destroy enemy infantry units, which, according to defenders, behave like "locusts," trying to seize additional territory—even despite significant losses. Meanwhile, the enemy, according to DeepState data, is striving to create a so-called "buffer zone"—a strategic line of defense intended to strengthen Russian positions and reduce Ukrainian defenders' potential for a future counteroffensive. Latest reports from analysts indicate that the Russians have achieved significant success toward settlements such as Novenkove, Basivka, Zhuravka, and near Ordyannyi. Since May 24, parts of the Sumy region around these settlements have been officially marked as occupied by the enemy, signaling ongoing territorial advances and attempts to establish a foothold in this critical area. The current frontline situation causes concern among military analysts and civic figures. An advisor to Ukraine’s Ground Forces noted in a media interview that Russian troops are seeking opportunities to consolidate their positions by employing new tactics and approaches, particularly mobile units that rapidly reach strategic points. In this context, Ukrainian soldiers face considerable difficulties, as enemy advances threaten to escalate into a serious regional security risk. Overall, the situation in Sumy Oblast remains challenging. Ukrainian defenders are doing everything possible to prevent full occupation and maintain control over key sectors. However, it is evident that the enemy is consolidating its positions and does not intend to withdraw quickly, which presents new challenges for the defenders and underscores the need for strengthened defenses and strategic planning in the future.
