Kyiv and its suburbs have once again come under fire from Russian drones and ballistic missiles — this is yet another wave of attacks that caused significant destruction and casualties

On the evening of Wednesday, May 23, Ukraine’s capital was declared to be in an air raid alert again. This was reported by the local military administration, official agencies, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The scale of the attack posed new challenges for the air defense system, and the population, already accustomed to such events, had to seek shelter in safe places. According to data from the Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA) and Mayor Vitali Klitschko, around 10:00 PM the city sounded an alarm due to a threat of drone-kamikaze strikes or ballistic missile attacks. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that, at that time, strike drones were detected and destroyed over the southern part of Kyiv. During an operational briefing, the Kyiv mayor confirmed that the air defense systems were operating normally. A significant portion of the damage was recorded in the Holosiivskyi district: fragments of enemy drones and missiles damaged four cars and shattered several windows in apartment buildings. Official reports state that no one was hurt as a result of these falls. However, the situation was more critical in the Brovary district of Kyiv region, where debris caused injuries to two civilians — a 54-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman. They sustained shrapnel wounds to their thighs and were hospitalized; their condition is considered stable. The review of the situation in the capital was expanded after midnight on May 24. Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that over 20 kamikaze drones and various types of missiles were moving toward the city, mostly coming from three districts of the region — Brovary, Vyshhorod, and Boryspil. He stated that during the night, the air defense forces were actively working, intercepting and destroying threats. According to reports also in the morning of May 24, even larger-scale attacks were expected: at 12:41 AM, Klitschko announced the operation of air defense systems in the capital, and by 1:02 AM — in Kyiv region. The attacks possibly involved a combination of lethal unmanned aerial vehicles and ballistic missiles — these types of weapons were confirmed by the Ukrainian Air Force. The Kyiv mayor emphasized that the situation remains tense: "Explosions in the city. Air defense forces are actively working. The city and region are under a combined enemy attack!" More details about the consequences included debris hitting several residential areas. In particular, debris fell on streets and residential buildings in the Shevchenkivskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. Rescue services and medical personnel responded promptly in both cases. In the Sviatoshynskyi district, fires erupted at two locations — which were localized, but floors with debris remain dangerous. Another missile fragment was found in the Obolon district, where a fire was also reported — extinguished by firefighters. In the Solomianskyi district, drone debris fell on a residential building. As a result of these strikes, two local residents were injured and required medical assistance. Several other cases of damage are reported in the Dnipro district, where first aid was also provided to the wounded. According to official statements, the situation in Kyiv remains tense: enemy drones and missiles pose a serious threat to residents’ safety. Ukrainian defenders continue to fight these threats in the air, but their response speed and strength are crucial in preventing even more devastating consequences. For now, the air war continues, and Ukrainian defenders are doing their utmost to protect the capital and the region from further damage. Meanwhile, residents have become accustomed to these dangerous situations, holding onto hope for a quick cessation of attacks and a return to normal life.
