The G7 Finance Ministers’ Summit unanimously reaffirmed their firm stance regarding the assets of the Russian Federation in their jurisdictions, declaring that these assets will remain frozen until the Kremlin ceases its aggression against Ukraine and fully compensates for all damages incurred
This important decision is a logical continuation of the Western strategy of sanctions and targeted economic isolation of the aggressor country, aimed at applying pressure and compelling Russia to return to diplomatic negotiations for peace. In the final communique issued after the financial summit, participants explicitly reaffirmed their principled position: “We confirm that, in accordance with our legal systems, Russia's sovereign assets in our jurisdictions will remain frozen until Russia ends its aggression and compensates Ukraine for the damages caused.” This firm statement demonstrates that the G7 has no intention of making concessions to Moscow without concrete steps toward de-escalation and a just resolution of the conflict. Besides the section on assets, the document included three separate points supporting Ukraine. Specifically, participants strongly condemned the ongoing war Russia is waging against Ukraine and emphasized unwavering support for the Ukrainian people’s struggle for independence and territorial integrity. The joint communique clearly states: “We condemn Russia’s continued brutal war against Ukraine and express our deep respect for the unyielding resilience of the Ukrainian people, as well as for the country's economic structures that have suffered significant destruction.” They assured that the G7 will not abandon its commitments and will remain dedicated to unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its pursuit of a just and lasting peace. Another significant aspect of the statement is the recognition of active efforts by Ukrainian authorities to achieve a ceasefire. The ministerial resolution notes that “we welcome current efforts to reach a ceasefire,” while also warning that if peace cannot be established, G7 countries will continue to take all possible measures, including tightening sanctions. The goal is to stabilize and restore Ukraine as quickly as possible. The summit participants also emphasized continued support for Ukraine’s recovery program. They announced cooperation with Ukrainian authorities to coordinate reconstruction efforts and facilitate international financial assistance. A Reconstruction Conference for Ukraine is scheduled to take place in Rome on July 10-11, 2025. An important provision guarantees that any countries or organizations that supplied military equipment or funded Russia’s military actions will not benefit from the process of rebuilding Ukrainian infrastructure, serving as a safeguard against corruption schemes and illicit enrichment. Overall, the G7 summit outcomes demonstrate the resolve of leading global economies not only to maintain pressure on Russia through economic isolation but also to consistently support Ukraine in its direct fight for independence, sovereignty, and stability. In light of these decisions, the international community clearly affirms its position: the aggressor state’s assets will remain frozen until Moscow takes steps to end the war and provides rightful compensation for the destruction caused to Ukraine. Consequently, the global strategy to combat Russian aggression is evolving and reaffirming its unwavering goal — to restore peace and justice in the region.
