In Kyiv, the police uncovered a scheme for the illegal smuggling of military conscripts across the border to Moldova, organized by the owner of a popular barbershop in the capital

This incident serves as a regrettable reminder of how dangerous business can be in the hands of malicious individuals who exploit trust and a safe environment to carry out unlawful activities. According to the National Police of Ukraine, investigators established that the entrepreneur, owner of one of Kyiv’s barbershops, systematically identified individuals in his client base who felt the need to leave the country secretly from the authorities. After several lengthy conversations, he offered them illegal methods of crossing the border, promising assistance for a significant fee — $14,000 per person. The specific interception occurred after receiving the first part of the bribe — $9,800 — at which point law enforcement conducted investigative actions and detained the offender, who confirmed his involvement in organizing the criminal scheme. Preliminary data indicate that he promised to help one client cross through border checkpoints in the Odesa region, bypassing official border controls and procedures established by law. The suspect is currently under investigation; he has already been notified of suspicion for organizing illegal transportation of persons across Ukraine’s state border. Under current legislation, such crimes are punishable by up to nine years in prison with or without confiscation of property. Law enforcement emphasizes that these criminal schemes undermine state security and pose a threat both to the perpetrators and to citizens attempting to cross the border illegally, bypassing lawful procedures. The offenders’ actions were exposed in a timely manner, but this case once again highlights the importance of heightened vigilance regarding border security and increased control at the border. The National Police urges citizens to be cautious and report suspicious offers and activities in their communities. It is crucial to remember that any assistance in illegally crossing the border is a serious crime punishable by law, and the risks to life and safety can be extremely high. Therefore, the state will continue working to identify and eradicate such schemes in order to protect its citizens and preserve the integrity of the national border.
