Finland is strengthening its control and actively increasing its readiness in response to the growing military activity of Russia near its national borders

The country's official representatives are paying close attention and carefully monitoring changes in the military-political situation, in particular the build-up of Russia’s military infrastructure near the Finnish border, which raises concerns among security circles. Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkinen emphasized in his statements that the country is keeping a vigilant watch over Russia's actions near the shared border. Special attention has been given to information from the military and media sources indicating that Moscow is intensifying the construction and development of military infrastructure in the region, demonstrating an intention to maintain or even increase its military capabilities near the Finnish border. As recently as last month, media and satellite images — including materials from the American publication The New York Times — recorded significant expansion of Russian military facilities near the Finnish border. Analysts assert that Russia is preparing means for rapid troop deployment in the event of escalating conflict scenarios, especially after the conclusion of the war in Ukraine. During an interview with AFP, Häkkinen pointed out that the Finnish armed forces, in cooperation with NATO allies and partners, are carefully tracking all movements and intentions of Russia regarding the buildup of military forces or infrastructure. "We have high-tech capabilities to monitor any direct or covert actions of Russia," he emphasized. "As a NATO member, Finland maintains a strong and reliable position in security and defence." According to him, the country has a well-developed national defence system, which is significantly reinforced by universal conscription and large reserves capable of quick mobilisation in case of threats. The Finnish security strategy is based not only on modern military technologies but also on an entire system of preparation and societal readiness. "We invest significant resources and efforts into preparing the entire population for possible crises and external challenges," Häkkinen stated. "This enables us to act quickly and coherently, regardless of the nature of the threat." Finland's accession to NATO in 2023 marked an important step in strengthening its security framework. Considering its over 1,340-kilometer-long border with Russia, the country is contemplating potential developments with regard to escalation and the further build-up of Russian military forces. According to high-ranking military experts, Moscow is unlikely to be satisfied with the existing steps and may continue to enhance its military presence in border regions even after the end of hostilities in Ukraine. Sources within Finnish media and military structures predict that Russia aims to establish a stronger foothold in the region and expand its military presence in response to NATO’s strategic influence and the increasing direct threat from the West. Finland, for its part, is preparing for various development scenarios. It is also possible that the United States and other NATO allies may not fully adhere to Article 5 of the alliance’s charter, which guarantees collective defence in case of aggression against any member, potentially negatively impacting regional security. Amid increasing tensions and possible military threats, analysts’ forecasts suggest that Northern Europe could become one of the most actively heated conflict and security spaces in the future. Preparations and measures by Finland and its partners are aimed at mitigating risks and ensuring stability, but the challenges posed by Russia remain relevant and require a systematic and coordinated approach.
