Complications from Restoration Work on the Railway Line in the Carpathians: Will Repairs Be Completed in Three Days?

Destroyed and Repaired Track in the Mountain Region: How Ukrzaliznytsia Is Combating the Aftermath of the Storm Following the recent incident on the Yasinya – Voronenko railway section in the Carpathians, the company "Ukrzaliznytsia" issued an official statement regarding the progress of infrastructure recovery work. According to the department, due to challenging geological conditions and the high level of soil reinforcement, the recovery timeline may extend up to three days — instead of the initially announced two. At the same time, railway workers report that work is being carried out around the clock, with all necessary diverse technical equipment already mobilized at the scene. We remind you that a landslide occurred a few days ago, completely blocking traffic on the railway section connecting popular resort regions of the Carpathians. This caused significant inconvenience for thousands of passengers planning journeys or returning from mountain resorts. As a result, a full transition to alternative transportation was introduced — buses and backup trains. The company quickly organized bus transfer systems from departure points to the nearest backup railway stations to minimize discomfort for travelers. As stated in Ukrzaliznytsia’s official statement, repair works began immediately after the incident and are ongoing without interruption. Representatives of the railway service noted the seriousness of the situation due to the complexity of ground reinforcement in this region. This means that the process of strengthening and restoring the track has proven more difficult and time-consuming than initially expected. All necessary resources — work crews and modern equipment — are already on-site and engaged in the rapid elimination of the accident’s consequences. Currently, alternative solutions have been implemented for passengers who had to change their routes. Specifically, train No. 96 Rakhiv – Kyiv will operate with backup carriages after bus transportation, which is organized by the transportation company from Yasinya. Additionally, throughout the holiday period, it is planned to ferry passengers of other Rakhiv-bound trains via Kvasiv and Rakhiv to Yasinya, ensuring the fastest possible return to usual routes and reducing delays. Already prior to this, due to extensive destruction and temporary suspension of movement, Ukrzaliznytsia warned of route changes in the region on May 23. This was one of the largest emergency situations on transportation routes in the Carpathians in recent times, requiring increased mobilization of forces and swift decisions. Participants involved — railway workers, rescuers, and technical personnel — are exerting maximum effort to overcome the natural disaster effects and restore railway operation as quickly as possible. However, the widespread and complex geological conditions of the mountainous area complicate the pace of work, and full track restoration may take up to three days. For now, passengers are making concessions — using buses and backup trains, which at least provide minimal transportation options. Nevertheless, experts assure that all efforts are aimed at accelerating the completion of repairs and restoring movement in the shortest possible time. At the same time, this is not the first instance where natural disasters or ground collapses disrupt train schedules in the Carpathians, requiring ongoing improvements in response systems and infrastructure modernization. Therefore, further work to reinforce roads and railway approaches is planned for many months ahead to prevent similar situations in the future or at least minimize their consequences.
