According to the Polish PM, the incident occurred several days ago and has been actively responded to by Polish military forces, illustrating the seriousness of the situation. According to publicly available information, the Russian vessel, which belongs to the so-called “shadow fleet”—a flotilla of ships subjected to international sanctions and representing a potential threat to regional security—conducted unusual and suspicious maneuvers near the underwater cable. This energy facility holds strategic importance for the region's energy supply, and any interference attempts provoke serious alarm. The Polish government leader emphasized in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) that Polish troops, upon receiving a warning signal about potential danger, promptly intervened in the situation. As a result, the Russian vessel refused to continue its actions and sailed to one of Russia’s ports, which may indicate either an attempt to conceal its intentions or a willingness to de-escalate the conflict. This incident occurred amid ongoing regional tensions and active military maneuvers by Russia, which, according to reports, systematically employs the so-called “shadow fleet” to carry out undeclared operations in international waters. Meanwhile, several days ago in the Baltic Sea, Estonian forces attempted to intercept a Russian tanker, Jaguar, also associated with potential “shadow fleet” activities. They tried to stop the vessel as it traveled through the international waters of the Gulf of Finland toward the Primorsk port; however, the crew refused to comply with border guards’ demands and left Estonian waters. Notably, in response to these actions by Russian forces, Estonia reported the appearance of a fighter aircraft that violated its airspace. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized that such incidents indicate Russia’s efforts to defend and support its “shadow fleet,” which is a sign of increasing military tension in the Baltic Sea region. This all occurs amid rising instability and Russia’s military presence near neighboring borders, raising concerns among NATO countries and key European Union partners.
