A tragic news from Ukraine: a Latvian citizen, who fought alongside the Ukrainian people for their independence, has died in the ongoing battles. Information about his death has received wide coverage in Latvian and Ukrainian media, sparking deep condolences and discussions about the participation of foreign volunteers in the fight against Russian aggression. The incident occurred during fighting in the Kharkiv direction. According to Latvian sources, on May 14, 2025, a clash took place near Kharkiv, during which a Latvian volunteer, known by his callsign "Latvietis," was wounded. During an attempt to evacuate him, he, along with his comrades, was killed by a drone strike from the enemy, creating a new wave of grief within the Latvian community. This information was confirmed to Latvian Television by one of the sources close to the soldier, while official confirmation from diplomatic authorities is still awaited. Latvia's Foreign Ministry representative, Diana Egliite, stated that the embassy in Kyiv currently does not have official confirmation of the tragedy but will monitor developments and provide additional information as soon as it becomes available. It is worth noting that prior to joining the Ukrainian combat efforts, Tarenov had not served in the Latvian Army; his participation was solely as a volunteer. This highlights his personal desire to support Ukrainian resistance and further deepens respect for his bravery and selflessness. The Latvian civic organization "Centuria" reported that Mykyta Tarenov was wounded during hostilities on the Kharkiv front. In tough conditions, he fought bravely against the enemy, contributing to Ukraine's defense. However, his life was cut short during an evacuation operation when an enemy drone unexpectedly struck, ultimately fatally wounding the Latvian volunteer. This is already the third loss among Latvian volunteers in this war. In early 2025, Ukrainian defenders mourned the death of Edgar Platonov, and in April, the tragic loss of another foreign citizen—Lithuanian Thomas Valentelis—was confirmed. Each such loss affirms that the participation of foreign volunteers in Ukraine's struggle is active and desperate, and their contributions are invaluable to the overall victory. Amid recent events in Latvia and neighboring countries, discussions continue on lowering barriers for foreigners wishing to support Ukraine through combat participation. Many Latvians see their compatriot as a symbol of solidarity and courage, and his death emphasizes the importance of international support for Ukrainian resistance. Ukraine has lost a worthy son, and every fellow countryman, as well as numerous supporters from other nations, mourn deeply for the man who gave his most precious—his life—for our freedom. The story of Latvian volunteer Mykyta Tarenov will forever remain a symbol of courage and self-sacrifice for those who volunteered to defend Ukraine during its most difficult tests of independence.
