Pope Leo XIV of Rome for the first time in his historic speech mentioned Ukraine, emphasizing its efforts in the fight and desire for peace

This important and symbolic event took place during the solemn ceremony of his accession to the papal throne, reflecting a generational change and a new direction in the spiritual leadership of the Catholic Church. The newly elected pontiff, 69-year-old Cardinal Robert Prevo, known for his long-standing work in international affairs and administration of the Holy See, addressed the world in his first speech with a special focus on the problems of Ukraine and other hotspots around the globe. During the prayer Regina Coeli, which became the central part of the service, Leo XIV used the word "weary" regarding Ukraine — a term previously used by the late Pope Francis to describe the situation surrounding the war initiated by Russia. The pontiff’s speech served as a call for dialogue and conflict resolution; he stated: "Weary Ukraine is finally waiting for negotiations for a just and durable peace." These words are seen as another step toward global diplomacy and finding ways to resolve prolonged conflicts. In his speech, Leo XIV also drew attention to the humanitarian aspect of conflicts, with a particular emphasis on the situation in the Gaza Strip. He mentioned that "children, families, and the elderly are forced to starve," calling on the international community to address the humanitarian catastrophe and contribute to ending violence. This message signals the church’s active involvement in the fight to protect the rights of the most affected and defenseless. The new pope, who officially took the throne on May 18 of this year, was elected by conclave the day after his candidacy was announced. Known as Leo XIV, he has many years of management and diplomatic experience, including serving as a cardinal, a position he received from the previous Pope Francis in 2023. His activities are focused on strengthening the church’s role in promoting peace and justice in the world. After the solemn ceremonies and official greetings, Leo XIV, during his Sunday midday blessing, addressed all faithful worldwide with a call for active support and dissemination of the idea of peace. His call for a just and durable peace in Ukraine gained additional support from the current President, Volodymyr Zelensky. Prior to that, on May 12, the first telephone conversation took place between the leaders — Zelensky and Leo XIV — demonstrating a desire for international cooperation and dialogue in solving many pressing issues. Overall, the first speech of the newly elected Pope Leo XIV signals changes in the political and spiritual orientations of the church. A special place in his message is occupied by Ukraine, which is supported by the global community and is currently on the brink of finding ways to emerge from the deep conflict. This event gives hope that a new voice is emerging in the world political and humanitarian space, calling for peace, empathy, and dialogue among nations.
