Turkish circles report progress in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia held in Istanbul, describing them as more successful and constructive than expected
According to high-ranking sources who requested to remain anonymous, events on the diplomatic platform surprised many, as the parties began communicating openly and without accusations once again. According to a CNN interlocutor, the negotiations indeed proceeded on a fairly positive track despite all the difficulties and tensions of recent months. The Turkish source emphasizes that both the Russian and Ukrainian delegations showed a greater willingness to dialogue than anticipated the day before. Notably, there was mention of the absence of mutual accusations or accusations toward each other — a visible change in tone and style of communication. One of the key issues raised during the meeting was the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from temporarily occupied territories. The Russian side put forward a specific demand concerning the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from areas still under its control. This became a crucial point in discussions aimed at finding ways to cease hostilities, as Moscow seeks to solidify the status quo and end the conflict in accordance with its interests. Meanwhile, amid the complex negotiations, Turkish mediators proposed a conciliatory step by suggesting a prisoner exchange. The plan involved resolving the situation regarding three categories — children, civilians, and military personnel. According to the source, the Ukrainian delegation entered negotiations with the aim of obtaining approval for this exchange, which could become the first step toward preparing for a possible ceasefire. It is important to note that Russian representatives, compared to Ukrainian ones, showed less inclination for active consultations and compromise. However, the very fact that the parties entered negotiations and were present in Istanbul is already a signal of the growing need to find a way out of the deadlock in the conflict. Overall, Turkish authorities and diplomatic circles perceive this meeting as the beginning of a new stage in the rapidly evolving diplomatic process. According to them, from the very first hours, there was a clear desire from both sides to move toward constructive dialogue, reduce tensions, and find compromise solutions that could help stabilize the situation. Recall that the first meeting of Ukrainian and Russian delegations in over three years took place precisely in Istanbul on May 16. Following the negotiations, Ukrainian representatives, including Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, reported that the main topics were a ceasefire and humanitarian issues. The discussions also mentioned the possibility of a summit at the leader level for further advancement in the diplomatic process. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak voiced his opinion on this diplomatic process, condemning Russia’s unacceptable stance, which, in his words, demonstrates insufficient readiness for real compromises and finding a peaceful solution. His words heightened international attention to the situation, which remains extremely tense and demands active diplomatic responses from the global community.
