According to the popular TV channel Sky News, citing sources within Ukrainian diplomatic circles, the Russian side has presented a range of demands that could complicate any potential compromise and effectively make a ceasefire impossible in the near future. The source reports that Russia’s demands go far beyond previous agreements and are unrealistic. According to information received from Ukrainian diplomats, one of the main points that Russia persistently demanded is the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from territories occupied by Russia. If implemented, this step could lead to a formal ceasefire but also calls into question Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Additionally, the source noted that Russia has also put forward other, even more “problematic” demands—details of which have not been disclosed. However, it is clear that these demands contradict any notions of diplomatic resolution and violate international law and the principles of Ukrainian sovereignty. It should be noted that these negotiations in Istanbul have been the first direct meetings between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in the past three and a half years. Previously, it was reported that Moscow delegated a low-level representative—Vladimir Medinsky, an assistant to President Vladimir Putin—to the negotiations, which raised skepticism about the Kremlin’s seriousness in seeking a diplomatic solution. Furthermore, it was reported that Russian delegates exhibited unusual rigidity and demanded restrictions on the presence of international observers—in particular, they insisted that U.S. representatives not participate in the talks with the Ukrainian side. This underscores the tense atmosphere of the process and Russia’s desire to maintain control over the discussions, pursuing its interests at any cost. The lack of a constructive atmosphere and the adverse conditions set by the Russian side cast doubt on the prospects for achieving real progress in the negotiations. Advocates of diplomatic resolution are highly concerned that such ultimatums could prolong the conflict or lead to escalation. While the Ukrainian delegation confirms its interest in diplomatic pathways to resolve the conflict, the Ukrainian authorities must carefully consider each step to avoid disrupting the negotiation process and to preserve the possibility of restoring the country’s territorial integrity. The discussion of future peace agreements and the distant prospects for their signing remains open, but at present, it is clear: Russia continues to try to dictate conditions that effectively undermine any possibility of reaching a compromise and establishing long-term peace. The first days of the Istanbul talks have made it clear that the path to peace is still fraught with numerous obstacles, and future stages of the diplomatic process could be even more challenging.
