Ukraine is preparing for an important stage of diplomatic resolution of the conflict — negotiations with Russia will take place in Istanbul
This was officially announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky during a press conference in Ankara, emphasizing that the decision to participate in the upcoming meeting was made with the aim of seeking a diplomatic path to peace and de-escalation on the frontlines. The Ukrainian delegation, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, will head to Istanbul on May 15 for negotiations with the Russian side. Zelensky highlighted that this is a first step toward a possible resolution of the conflict, but at the same time, he expressed some skepticism regarding the seriousness of the Russians’ intentions. According to him, the composition of the Russian delegation demonstrates Moscow’s “unserious attitude” toward the negotiations, as key players who have real influence over decision-making in the Kremlin are absent, which could indicate a lack of readiness to make decisive compromises on their part. Zelensky emphasized that, despite the low level of seriousness among the Russian participants, Ukraine has still decided to take this step, considering the international context: the significant influence of high-ranking officials from the USA, support from Turkey, and President Erdogan’s personal role in trying to find a diplomatic solution. “Out of respect for the high-level delegations, for international efforts, and ultimately — in the hope of taking the first real steps toward ceasefire and de-escalation of the conflict — I have made the decision to send our delegation,” he stated. It is planned that some Ukrainian officials will partake in the negotiations with the Russian side. The president clarified that the Security Service of Ukraine chief and the Chief of the General Staff will not participate, since the main goal is to achieve objectives related to a ceasefire regime. “Regarding the agenda — the main idea is to lay the groundwork for ending hostilities through a ceasefire agreement or at least the implementation of a silence regime,” Zelensky emphasized. The main criterion for success for the Ukrainian delegation is precisely the search for initial concrete steps toward diplomatic resolution, although the head of state sarcastically noted that he does not really believe in a quick positive outcome of the negotiations. At the same time, he expressed hope that the Russians will at least make some gestures or demonstrate a willingness for constructive dialogue, since so far, all diplomatic efforts remain at the level of initial declarations. Thus, the Ukrainian side is taking another step in seeking a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Russia, which involves many unknown and ambiguous aspects. Responsible Ukrainian officials are showing openness to negotiations but are cautious about the complexity of the situation and the high level of uncertainty regarding the outcomes. The negotiations in Istanbul will undoubtedly mark a new stage in the diplomatic front line, where each step could have significant consequences for the future development of the situation in Ukraine and internationally.
