Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga held an important meeting on Monday with colleagues from leading European countries, during which they discussed further steps to stop Russia’s aggression and to increase sanctions pressure on the aggressor country. According to the Minister’s post on X (Twitter), the meeting, which took place in London, was attended by the heads of the foreign ministries of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, and France, as well as European Union diplomat Kaja Kallas. The main topic of discussion was efforts to establish peace and coordinated diplomatic strategies with Washington. "We synchronized our actions for this week, which are crucial for finding a sustainable peace and holding Russia accountable," the Ukrainian diplomat said. At the same time, Sybiga emphasized that Russia has rejected the proposal for a long-term ceasefire, which could have begun on May 12, and continues deliberately attacking Ukrainian forces and infrastructure across the entire front line. This indicates Moscow’s unwillingness to negotiate peace agreements and underscores the need for more decisive measures. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister also discussed a number of measures, including potential sanctions against key sectors of the Russian economy. This includes strengthening restrictions in the banking sector, energy, as well as new packages of military aid to Ukraine. "Putin must realize that ignoring peaceful initiatives and continuing the war will have severe consequences for Russia," Sybiga stressed. It is worth noting that this week, major European countries, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Poland, issued a strong call to Russia for an immediate ceasefire. They proposed a 30-day pause, which should start as early as Monday. The German government stated that if there are no signs of a ceasefire by the end of Monday, Berlin, in cooperation with European partners, will begin preparing comprehensive sanctions against Russia. Unfortunately, Vladimir Putin continues to ignore calls for negotiations and has not responded to the proposal for a 30-day pause. At the same time, the Kremlin issued a statement about its intention to hold "direct talks" with Kyiv in Istanbul this Thursday, May 15; however, specifics regarding further actions remain uncertain. Observers and the international community are anxiously awaiting developments, as the situation on the front remains tense and the global security crisis intensifies. The focus on political and diplomatic steps remains key in the search for peace, despite the growing tension and unfavorable prospects. European leaders are calling for unity and decisive action against Russia, demanding that Moscow renounce the war and return to peaceful negotiations. However, how long this unprecedented crisis will last remains an open question.
