Zelensky Announces Readiness for Any Negotiation Format After Ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed his openness to conducting peace negotiations with Russia in any format, depending on the situation on the frontline and the achievement of a significant diplomatic step — a complete and unconditional ceasefire. He announced this in his official post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), expressing hope for a rapid resolution of the conflict. Zelensky recalled that during recent telephone talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, they emphasized the importance of an immediate ceasefire for at least 30 days. "It was a good conversation, positive and concrete. I am grateful to President Trump for his support. We reached a shared position: an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire lasting no less than 30 days. We propose that it begins on Monday, May 12. We are waiting for Russia's response," Zelensky's message states. It is worth noting that this ceasefire initiative has deep historical roots: even during negotiations in Saudi Arabia, the U.S. suggested the first diplomatic resolution option for the conflict. Since then, this idea has been supported and persistently advanced by the Ukrainian side, as it is believed that only after establishing a short-term, comprehensive truce do opportunities for diplomacy and long-term solutions emerge. The statement emphasizes that without a ceasefire, the chances for diplomatic settlement decrease significantly. "When the ceasefire is in place, the best opportunity for diplomatic negotiations will open," the document states. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is prepared for any negotiation format and believes that dialogue should begin immediately after this critical step is taken. Additionally, it should be noted that on the eve, during the summit in Kyiv, the Ukrainian president communicated with U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting the strategic importance of this partnership and its role in the search for peace. Both leaders shared the common position that an urgent ceasefire of at least 30 days is necessary, which would serve as a starting point for further diplomatic efforts. It is also worth recalling that earlier this week, U.S. leader Donald Trump called for a 30-day ceasefire. He also noted that if Russia refuses — responsible for prolonging the conflict — the diplomatic community and the international community can expect new, intensified sanctions aimed at affecting the Russian economy and compelling the aggressor to return to negotiations. Currently, the Kremlin is refraining from official comments regarding this initiative, which adds tension to the efforts of both sides and increases the likelihood of further diplomatic escalation. Overall, the situation remains tense, but initial signals of a possible breakthrough in the diplomatic process are emerging. Ukraine is opening the door to any negotiation formats and insists on an unconditional ceasefire as the very first step toward peace. At the same time, the global community is closely monitoring developments, awaiting official responses from Russia and subsequent actions by international partners in this conflict.
