The head of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, made an unexpected statement regarding the future role of the United States in diplomatic negotiations aimed at resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict
In his speech, he mentioned that Washington could lose its status as the primary mediator, and that this position might quite likely be taken over by other global players — primarily Turkey and China. This statement served as a logical continuation of the discussions that have intensified among European diplomats after the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Warsaw on May 8, which highlights a trend toward seeking new formats and channels for peace efforts in Ukraine. According to Sikorski, Poland, as one of Kyiv’s most active allies in this conflict, has not only a strategic understanding of the situation but is also fully inclined to support U.S. efforts as the main "international mediator." However, if this path proves unsuccessful, alternative candidates will emerge once again. In particular, the Turkish government, which maintains relations with both sides and keeps quite open channels of communication, and China, which, according to the Polish diplomat, possesses sufficient economic and diplomatic leverage to influence Vladimir Putin and compel him to sit down at the negotiating table. It is worth noting that in light of recent events, the American administration, especially under Donald Trump’s leadership, actively advocates for the idea of mediation in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Informed sources report that the U.S. has made a diplomatic approach to ending the conflict and aims to facilitate dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian authorities consistently express their support for an unconditional ceasefire, a stance also held by some politicians across the ocean, and aligned with the position articulated by Washington. It is also important to highlight that the recent comment by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris reflects the internal dynamics within American politics regarding the future of the negotiation process. She noted that the U.S. currently remains optimistic and expects both Ukraine and Russia to agree to engage directly with one another. According to her, this approach could help find a compromise and prevent the escalation of the conflict. On the other hand, experts point out that a shift in the U.S. role as the primary mediator could fundamentally change the geopolitical landscape in the region. Simultaneously, preparations for potential negotiations have been underway for several months, marking a new phase of diplomatic resolution.
