This decision comes ahead of the planned publication of the new "Immigration White Paper," which promises to fundamentally change the approach to the process of integrating foreign nationals. Such an increase in requirements aims to ensure that newcomers adapt to British society as quickly and effectively as possible, acquiring the necessary language skills to achieve their social, economic, and professional goals. According to information published by The Times, a revised version of the UK's immigration policy will soon be released. The new policy proposes mandatory language exams for visa applicants. Currently, a basic GCSE level in English as a Foreign Language is considered the minimum requirement, which is deemed insufficient for proper integration. Under existing standards, immigrants need only demonstrate the ability to understand and respond to simple questions related to work, study, or leisure; they must possess this language competence to navigate travel scenarios and compose basic texts on familiar or personal topics. However, plans are underway to introduce a higher proficiency level — level B2 on the international scale. This level entails the ability to communicate fluently and spontaneously without searching for expressions or formulating thoughts extensively, as well as speaking flexibly and effectively for various purposes — from social interactions and education to employment. Expressions at this high level of English should be clear, well-structured, and appropriate to the complexity of the situations faced by immigrants. A source from government agencies emphasizes: “If you wish to move to the UK, you need to contribute to society and demonstrate your ability to integrate.” This means future migrants will be required to showcase a high level of language competence to communicate effectively, organize their ideas in spoken and written forms, and comfortably work with texts and discuss complex topics. It is also noted that the "White Paper" aims not only to improve the language training of immigrants but also to serve as a tool in combating recidivism and the ever-growing migration wave. Last year, the overall migration level reached a record 728,000 people. At the same time, this policy seeks to facilitate employment for over 9 million “economically inactive” citizens — those currently seeking work or outside the labor market — to improve the country’s economic situation. The new rules will also affect individuals applying for refugee or asylum status. They will be required to meet the new language standards within five years of entering the country — i.e., attain a minimum level of B2 proficiency — in order to qualify for permanent residence or citizenship. Parliamentarians believe this will promote higher-quality integration and increase the chances of successful life in British society for newcomers. Thus, the UK government is preparing for broad changes in immigration policy, which are expected to be stricter but more focused on quality and inclusion.
