The newly elected Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has already expressed his intention to make his first foreign trip specifically to Kyiv in order to personally reaffirm Germany’s support for Ukraine in its fight for independence and sovereignty. According to sources cited by "European Pravda," referencing data from the Tagesschau television channel, active preparations for this visit are already in the final stages. Merz seeks to utilize all diplomatic tools to help stabilize the situation and achieve lasting peace. The scheduled negotiations are set to take place ahead of the weekend, and, according to Germany’s cyber foreign policy chief, he wants to do everything possible within the European Union to create conditions conducive to instating a long-term ceasefire. The Chancellor emphasized that the main issue requiring urgent resolution is Russia’s agreement to a 30-day ceasefire regime. One of the key topics in the discussions is security guarantees for Ukraine, which, according to Merz, should only be provided after a long-term agreement to end hostilities is reached. Friedrich Merz underscored the importance of the United States’ role in this process, pointing to the need for their active involvement and support. He focused on the fact that the U.S. must continue fulfilling its commitments within NATO and remain a reliable partner for Ukraine. The main strategy outlined by the Chancellor is to support multilateral efforts aimed at ensuring regional security and stability. Even before his planned visit, Merz traveled to Paris, where he met with senior French diplomats. The next stop on this diplomatic tour will be Warsaw, where he aims to strengthen cooperation with the Polish side and reinforce European unity in countering Russian aggression. On Friday, May 9, the Chancellor plans to participate in important negotiations in Brussels, where he will meet with the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission. It is there that further steps regarding the EU’s policy in the context of the Ukraine-Russia conflict and efforts to attain lasting peace will be determined. This visit and Merz’s diplomatic activity demonstrate Berlin’s intention to play a more active role in seeking peace and ensuring security in Europe, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts with international partners. Solving the Ukraine-Russia crisis requires joint actions, diplomacy, and persistence — and Germany, striving for peace, calls for unity and constructive dialogue.
