Zelensky warns about possible provocations and dangers on May 9: “Whoever believes the Russians — let them try it on themselves”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his latest speech, once again urged the international community to be extremely cautious regarding potential provocative activities by Russian officials on Victory Day, May 9. In an interview given during a press conference with Czech President Petr Pavel, the head of the Ukrainian state openly expressed his concern over the intentions of Russian intelligence agencies and political leaders. According to Zelensky, “unfortunately, we have long understood who our neighbors are — Russia — and what they are capable of to achieve their goals.” The president emphasized that the Kremlin does not hide its intentions to use provocations to create chaos and destabilization, especially on the eve of May 9 — a day when Russia traditionally celebrates its victory in World War II and demonstrates its militaristic strength. Zelensky recalled that even during the so-called “ceasefire” announced by Russia for Easter, they conducted over a hundred assaults, including on Ukrainian territories, which proves the unseriousness of their statements. Currently, the situation at the front remains tense: “Over the past few days, more than 200 assaults have taken place in our direction — the highest number in recent months, indicating an escalation of aggression from their side.” The head of state added that “there is no trust in Russian promises,” and called on world leaders to be prepared for any provocations. “If anyone still believes their words — let them try this approach on themselves,” Zelensky stressed sharply. He underlined that such a strategy is only possible with the support of those naive enough to believe in Moscow’s peaceful intentions, and urged international partners to be vigilant, especially in the context of upcoming events in Russia. The Ukrainian leader’s previous comments were made on May 3, when he stated that Ukraine is unable to guarantee security for foreign delegations during the planned Moscow parade on May 9. Accordingly, the Ukrainian authorities are not responsible for possible actions by Russian forces targeting gourmets, diplomats, and official guests who decide to attend the celebrations in Moscow. These words sparked sharp criticism, even from neighboring countries. In particular, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico openly condemned the Ukrainian leader’s statements. He said that such remarks pose a direct threat to the global diplomatic process, since any deterioration of security in Russia could lead to complications for states with officials present there. Currently, discussions are ongoing at the international level regarding the protection of diplomats and the safety of participants in scheduled events. Overall, on the eve of May 9, Ukrainian and world politicians continue to warn about the risks of provocations from the Russian side. Meanwhile, Ukrainians are preparing for possible scenarios of development to maximize the safety of their citizens and avoid any provocative incidents on this significant date, which is a symbol of victory and heroism for Russian authorities. The government urges international partners to remain vigilant, and society to stay united in the fight for Ukraine’s security and integrity.
